Staying Fit in Nepal: Gyms, Yoga, and Mountain Everything
From 500 NPR gyms to luxury fitness clubs, rooftop yoga to trail running. How to maintain (or find) your fitness in the Himalayas.
Fitness in Nepal: Get Ripped or Die Trying
Thought I'd lose my gains moving to Nepal. Instead, I'm in the best shape ever. Between cheap gyms, endless hiking, and altitude training without trying, this place is a fitness paradise. Here's the full breakdown.
Gyms - From Hardcore to Hilarious
Local Gyms (500-1500 NPR/month):
Rusty equipment, Bollywood music, no AC. But the community! These places are social clubs. Uncle teaching you Hindi curses between sets. Best gym experience ever.
Mid-Range (3000-5000 NPR/month):
Physique Workshop, Pumping Iron - decent equipment, some classes, less character but more reliable.
Bougie Options (8000+ NPR/month):
The Pavilions, Hyatt Fitness - for when you need that Western gym fix. Pool, sauna, people who actually wipe down equipment.
Yoga Scene is Legit
Pranamaya Yoga: Serious practice, good teachers, 15,000 NPR monthly unlimited
Sawar Yoga: More spiritual, includes meditation, 8,000 NPR/month
Free Options: Pashupatinath at 6 AM, Garden of Dreams sometimes
Trail Running Paradise
Shivapuri trails: 20 minutes from city, endless options
Godavari: Technical trails, less crowded
Valley Rim: 3-day trail run around entire Kathmandu Valley
Join Trail Running Nepal Facebook group - runs every weekend
The Natural Enhancement Culture
Gym bros here are into "natural supplements" - some legit Ayurvedic stuff, some... not so legit. Hemp protein is huge (and legal). Some guys swear by traditional herbs for recovery. The roid boys exist too but keep it lowkey. Your choice, but altitude already boosts red blood cells naturally.
Crossfit and Climbing
Crossfit Committed: Only box in town, cult following, expensive but good
Astrek Climbing: Indoor walls, great community, 2,000 NPR day pass
Natural rocks: Nagarjun, Hattiban - free climbing spots 30 minutes away
Sports Scenes
- Football: Expat league plays Saturdays, very competitive
- Cricket: Everyone plays, join any neighborhood team
- Basketball: Courts in Sanepa, pickup games daily
- Swimming: Hyatt or Gokarna pools, 1,000 NPR day pass
- Cycling: Mountain bikes rule, road bikes suffer
- Martial arts: Surprisingly good MMA and Muay Thai gyms
The Altitude Advantage
Living at 1,400m means natural EPO boost. Go back to sea level? Feel like superman. Every run here is altitude training. No wonder Nepali runners are beasts.
Staying Motivated
Monsoon: Gym or get fat
Winter: Layer up or freeze
Pollution season: Indoor only or lung damage
But spring and autumn? You'll want to exercise just to be outside
"Lost 15 kg in first year just from walking everywhere and eating dal bhat. Added muscle from hiking. Nepal is a gym membership you live in." - Carlos, Mexico
